F.A.Q.

Included below are answers to many common questions about the photography sessions.  If your question is not answered below, please feel free to give me a call or visit the Contact page to send me an email.

WHAT IS YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC STYLE?
My favorite images to capture are candid, natural, and creative images where expressions of raw emotion, love, simplicity, and personality are communicated.  These images tell the stories, capture the priceless moments, and serve as cherished memories in your family for years to come.

Your unique personality and style can also be captured and arranged in specific poses, and I will give guidance with your input.  Especially when it comes to weddings, the posed positions are an excellent addition to candid shots in your photographic collection.

To learn more about my photographic style, please visit the My Style page (also located under the More Info menu item).

WHEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE A SESSION WITH YOU?
It’s suggested that you contact me as soon as you know you would like to arrange for a session.  The schedule can fill up quickly, especially in the busy season (spring and fall).

For maternity clients, please schedule your session for around 30 weeks.  After 30 weeks, discomfort may become more of an issue, and the photo session may therefore not be as enjoyable.  This enables you to still be comfortable while enabling the photos to capture the uniqueness of your pregnancy by showing off your “baby belly”.

For newborn clients, it’s ideal to have the session 5-10 days after your baby’s arrival so please schedule the session well in advance with this in mind.  This is the time when the newborns are the sleepiest and can be molded and folded into all those adorable and cuddly positions. If your baby arrives early or late, your appointment time can be adjusted as necessary.

For engagement clients, consider the location and seasons you wish to have for your engagement session.  Be sure to allow adequate time for the processing, editing, and ordering of your photos prior to submitting them for publication in your newspaper or for ‘Save the Date’ announcements.

For wedding clients, please schedule as soon as your wedding date is established and your venues secured.  Engagement sessions may be included depending on the package you select.

WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDED AGES FOR SCHEDULING PROFESSIONAL PORTRAITS?
This is a common question for new parents.  My answer is to focus on the child’s developmental stage instead of the chronological age.  Consider the following timeline for professional portraits:

Newborns: It’s ideal to have the session 5-10 days after your baby’s arrival as this is the time when the newborns are the sleepiest and can be molded and folded into all those adorable and cuddly positions.

Sitting up stage / 7 Months:  Babies are more likely to sit solidly on their own around 7 months.  Their unique personalities and expressions often shine through during this time.

Walking Stage / 1 Year:  For the 1 year portrait and/or the walking stage, it’s recommend to have a session around 14 months.

After Age 1:  A good indicator that it is time to schedule an additional photo session is when you notice the child’s appearance has changed as compared to the previous photos.  After the child’s first birthday, many clients opt to schedule for annual or semi-annual photo sessions to capture their unique developmental stages.  Some suggested times include spring, fall, birthdays, and the holidays.   However, these are just recommendations as your requests are of utmost importance when scheduling for the creation of your special portrait memories.

These are all just suggestions and I happily work with all ages and stages. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask, and I will help you come up with a perfect plan for your family.

HOW LONG SHOULD I EXPECT MY PHOTO SESSION TO TAKE?
Times vary depending on the purpose of the session (Ex. wedding, senior portraits, engagement, family pictures, other special occasions, etc.)  Some other aspects to consider include the age and disposition of the children, the number of wardrobe changes, the locations selected, and how many people are included in the photographs.  Outdoor portrait sessions usually last around 45 min to an hour and 15 minutes.  Newborn sessions may sometimes last an hour and a half.  Wedding packages average around 6-8 hours of coverage, depending on the package selected.  However for any of the sessions, extra time can be accommodated if needed, as the happiness reflected in your photos is of prime importance.

WHAT CLOTHING IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE PHOTO SESSION?
It is very important to prepare for your session ahead of time.  When selecting clothing and accessories for your photo session, consider timeless simplicity as well as coordinated layers, textures, and colors.  To help you look your best, I’ve included some general guidelines located under the More Info menu item > Wardrobe Details page.

Feel free to email me your ideas or pictures of what you are thinking, and I will be happy to help and provide feedback.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO THE PHOTO SESSION?
The essence of your shoot will focus on capturing the child’s unique personality and the relationships among your family.  Unless there is something specifically meaningful to you, you do not need to bring additional items to the session.  However, we welcome any personal additions or items of significance that you may want to include.  Some examples include sentimental items or unique props such as an infant’s blanket, a child’s favorite toy, colorful lollipops, and hats, accessories, or scarves for any age.  If you have any other fun, unique, or creative ideas, please bring them along to personalize your session even more.  If your goal is to have a more creative session for your child, please email with any questions or for additional ideas.

WHAT ARE THE LOCATION OPTIONS FOR PHOTO SESSIONS?
Shelby shoots on location and tailors the location to meet the client’s desires.  She prefers to use as much natural light as possible depending upon the time of day and venue.

WHAT IF IT RAINS ON MY SESSION DATE?
An outdoor photo session won’t be canceled except for inclement weather or if it is raining during your session time.  Many times, the lighting during imperfect weather (Ex. cloudy day) can actually be preferable for photography.  Plan on still having your shoot unless weather conditions would interfere.  I will also be watching the weather and will call you as soon as I know that the shoot will have to be canceled and rescheduled.  If this happens, there is no need to worry as you will be taken care of, and a new session time will be scheduled for you.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I NEED TO RESCHEDULE MY SESSION?
I understand that the unexpected can occur especially when you have children.  If you need to reschedule for emergencies, please call as soon as possible (a minimum of 24-48 hours in advance).   If your child is ill or unusually cranky, it is recommended to reschedule your session.  If your child has a mild bump, bruise, or scratch, these can be removed with photo editing.  However, if something compromises your child’s natural appearance, such as a black eye, it is best to reschedule after healing occurs.  The sitting fee is valid provided you reschedule your session within  six months of your original scheduled session.

WHAT ARE THE CHARGES FOR THE PHOTO SESSION AND ORDERING PRINTS / PRODUCTS?

HOW AND WHEN AM I ABLE TO VIEW MY IMAGES AND PLACE MY ORDER?
You will receive a call or email approximately 2-3 weeks after the session.   At that time you will be given a password to view your personal online gallery of proofs to place your order.  After you select your photos, I will provide any necessary photo retouching for the selected photos before I approve the order.  The order will then be sent and delivered to the address that you specified when placing your order.

Prints along with a variety of speciality photo products and gifts (such as Canvases, iPhone Covers, iPad Folios, Mugs, Cards, Cutting Boards, Calendars, Aluminum Prints, Playing Cards, Water Bottles, etc.) are available for purchase through a la carte printing.

*There is also the option of purchasing a DVD with high-res images and copyright privileges, priced according to the number of proofs and number of edited images requested.   Please contact me to discuss this option.

HOW LONG WILL MY FILES BE RETAINED?
Non-ordered images will be retained for 45 days after your photo session date.  After 45 days, non-ordered images will be discarded.  All ordered images will be archived in multiple locations for up to a year from the photo session date at no additional cost.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN PHOTO PAPERS WHEN ORDERING PRINTS?
Kodak Endura E-Surface Color paper:  Kodak Professional Portra Endura E-Surface paper is the most popular premium paper. Accurate color, realistic saturation, excellent neutral flesh tone reproduction, and brighter colors are just a few of the attributes describing this paper. You will see improved color saturation and excellent skin-tone reproduction as well as brighter blues, cyan, purples, and reds. The standard longevity is 100 years in home display and 200 years in dark storage.

Kodak Metallic paper:  Kodak Professional Endura Metallic paper offers a unique pearlescent surface that will make your images really pop. Flesh tones look natural, details are crisp and colors are beautifully saturated. Endura Metallic paper offers natural looking flesh tones, sharp details and beautifully saturated colors. Plus, it is resistant to tearing and curling without any additional lamination. This paper uses a patented combination of film and laminate layers resulting in striking three-dimensional images on an ultra-bright background. You really have to see this paper to appreciate it.

Ilford True Digital B&W paper:  There is a difference between B&W and true digital B&W prints. The Ilford True Digital Black and White panchromatic, resin-coated paper is specifically designed for making continuous-tone B&W prints directly from digital images in digital exposing systems. This paper provides excellent tone reproduction from digital camera files. Because the emulsion is silver-based rather than dye-based, the imaging performance and characteristics of this paper are the same as traditional B&W continuous-tone papers. Which translates into neutral tonal characteristics offering good sharpness, display, and archival quality.

WILL I HAVE TO PAY TAXES ON MY SITTING FEE OR WHEN I BUY PRINTS?

State and local taxes are collected on the sitting fee if the session is held in Nebraska.  State and local taxes are collected on any prints or photography products bought and delivered to a Nebraska address.
